The spine is somewhat faded with pieces out of the head & tail & 1 tiny piece out of the mid-section. 191 pp. There is light staining to the endpapers. B&W frontispiece depicting the New York Inst…itute for the Blind. Very good internally. These letters were written by a blind poetess from Rochester, NY who, after her husband's death, attended the New York Institute for the Blind in New York City. A number of letters describe her travels around New York State including a trip back to Rochester via the Hudson River and the Catskills.

First published in 1849, this is a r…eprint from 1858.Sarah Helen DeKroyft (1818-1915), a native of the Rochester area of upstate New York; a school teacher who ws widowed on her wedding day and then suddenly became blind at the age of 27 years. She had an excellent education for a young woman of her time and turned to writing to support herself. This book is a collection of her letters, many of which were written during her one-year stay at the New York Institution for the Blind. They relate the thoughts and experiences of an educated young woman in her first three years of blindness.

Among the visitors who spoke to the residents was the Chief of the Ojibway Tribe, and a doctor lectur…ing on the Shrotes Hunger Cure. Several odd medical systems are described. Mulberry publisher's cloth decorated in blind, faded gilt titling to spine. Corners bumped, some small holes to hinge gutter, light foxing to title and tissue guards. On the whole a very good copy.
