Leather. Condition: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). Physician George Gregory's detailed two volume study of medical ailments, diseases, cures and treatments. English physician George Gregory's extensive two volume study of nineteenth century medicine and ailments. With volume I being the third US edition of 1831, and volume II being the first US edition of 1826. Collated, and illustrated with two plates to volume II, one of which is hand coloured. With volume I covering 'Acute Disease' and volume II 'Chronic Disease', a wealth of medical conditions are studied and examined within this lengthy work, with sections dedicated to fevers, inflammatory diseases and haemorrhages, alongside discussions of chronic diseases of the thorax, chylopoetic viscera and urinary systems, and 'constitutional diseases'.With a former owner's inscription to the head of each title page, and the library stamp of the 'Long Island Historical Society' to each title page, and no further library markings. These editions are updated to be relevant to American physicians by Nathaniel Potter and S. Colhoun.A fascinating and richly informative insight into prevailing medical attitudes to a wealth of diseases in the early nineteenth century. Rebacked, in quarter calf bindings with paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Slight fading to back strip of volume I, with minor rubbing to back strips. Internally, firmly bound. Former owner's inscription to head of title pages, with library stamp to title pages also. With instances of spotting throughout, and the odd patch of foxing to the rear of volume II. Very Good. book.
