Ryszard Witkowski was a sailplane and airplane pilot, an aeronautical engineer and one of the first helicopter pilots in Poland. He was a scout, soldier, Righteous Among the Nations, graduate of the Wawelberg and Rotwand Engineering School and the Warsaw University of Technology. He was a researcher and a test pilot at the Institute of Aviation, specializing in rotorcraft technology. He conducted helicopter tests. He set the first world record in Poland in the helicopter category. He was an instructor and lecturer at the University of Technology in Cranfield (Great Britain). He was a court expert and a member of the State Commission for Aircraft Accident Investigation. He cooperated in adapting Polish civil aviation to European and world standards - he also contributed to the adoption of NATO standards in military aviation. He was the author of the textbook "Construction and operation of helicopters", the cross-sectional book "History of helicopters", memoirs and autobiography "Six degrees of freedom" and many scientific, historical and monographic publications about aviation. Former president of the Aviation Senior Council and Test Pilots Club, and vice-president of the Warsaw Aviation Senior Club. He was an athlete glider with a gold badge with three diamonds, an international air sports referee and a Polish delegate to the FAI International Aviation Federation honored with the Rotorcraft Gold Medal. The technical problems involved in developing practical helicopters were studied and largely solved by German designers in the late '30s, and the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine used rotorcraft operationally in a variety of roles during WW2. This book describes the development and use of autogyros and helicopters in Germany up to 1945, plus the postwar use of German machines, and their influence on later helicopter designs, in other countries. The author was one of the very first Polish helicopter pilots trained in 1956. For many years a test pilot and senior instructor, he has lectured on helicopter theory and applications and is the author of many books and articles on rotorcraft; he is also the Chairman of the Experimental Test Pilots' Club and President of Polish Aviation Seniors' Club. Teodor Liviu Morosanu (Color drawings) and Remi Pi (illustrator).…
