Internally clean. A near fine copy. $15. * This work examines the evolution of forced convict labor as a form of punishment in Spain from the 16th through the 18th centuries. Pike argues that forced labor gradually replaced the corporal punishments common in the late Middle Ages. While early motives were retributive and utilitarian-intended to fulfill the state's need for cheap labor-18th-century reformers began to emphasize the rehabilitative potential of hard labor. The text details specific sites of servitude, including: The Galleys: Forced service as oarsmen on naval vessels. Mercury Mines of Almaden: Dangerous labor in state-run mines. Presidios: Convict labor used for the construction of military fortifications and naval arsenals, particularly in Moroccan outposts and the Caribbean. Pike provides statistical analysis of the prisoner population, noting that many were drawn from "rural workers" and "urban trades". She also covers specific groups subjected to servitude, such as vagrants and gypsies.
