Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. [6], ii, [2], 39, [1] pages. Illustrations. Signed by Joel P. Smith, President of Denison University, inside the front board below a presentation bookplate. Cover stained and somewhat worn. Pencil erasure residue on half-title page. These two Owens-Corning Lectures (of 1968 and 1969) were published in this bound volume for distribution to other academic communities, and to other friends and associates throughout the country. The Honorable Dean Rusk (formerly the U.S. Secretary of State) spoke on "Policy Is About The Future," and the Honorable J. William Fulbright, U.S. Senator from Arkansas and Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, spoke on "Militarism: Impact of the Military upon American Democracy." General Norstad (ret.) authored the Preface. From the Preface, it appears that the Owens-Corning Lectures were envisioned as an annual event. This appears to have been the inaugural lectures. Denison University is a private liberal arts college in Granville, Ohio. One of the earliest colleges established in the former Northwest Territory, Denison University was founded in 1831. The college was first called the Granville Literary and Theological Institution, later took the name Granville College, and, in the mid-1850s, was renamed Denison University, in honor of a key benefactor. The college was founded by Baptists who settled in the area. While the college's early curriculum was rooted in theological education, it also provided a broad education in literature and science. Female students attended the Granville Female Seminary beginning in 1832 followed by the Young Ladies' Institute in 1859, later renamed Shepardson College for Women in 1886. Shepardson College was incorporated as part of Denison in 1900. David Dean Rusk (February 9, 1909 - December 20, 1994) was the United States Secretary of State from 1961 to 1969 under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Rusk is one of the longest serving U.S. Secretaries of State, behind only Cordell Hull. During World War II, Rusk served as a staff officer in the China Burma India Theater. He was hired by the United States Department of State in 1945 and became Assistant Secretary of State for Far Eastern Affairs in 1950. In 1952, Rusk became president of the Rockefeller Foundation. After winning the 1960 presidential election, Kennedy asked Rusk to serve as secretary of state. He supported diplomatic efforts during the Cuban Missile Crisis and, though he initially expressed doubts about the escalation of the U.S. role in the Vietnam War, became known as one of its strongest supporters. Rusk served for the duration of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations before retiring from public office in 1969. After leaving office, he taught international relations at the University of Georgia School of Law. James William Fulbright (April 9, 1905 - February 9, 1995) was a United States Senator representing Arkansas from January 1945 until his resignation in December 1974. Fulbright is the longest serving chairman in the history of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A Southern Democrat and a staunch multilateralist who supported the creation of the United Nations. Fulbright opposed McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee and later became known for his opposition to American involvement in the Vietnam War. His efforts to establish an international exchange program eventually resulted in the creation of a fellowship program which bears his name, the Fulbright Program. Lauris Norstad (March 24, 1907 - September 12, 1988) was an American General in the United States Army Air Forces and United States Air Force. Norstad met General Dwight Eisenhower, who said of him: "I first met Lieutenant Colonel Lauris Norstad, a young air officer who so impressed me by his alertness, grasp of problems, and personality that I never thereafter lost sight of him. He was and is one of those rare men whose capacity knows no limit." In February 1943, he was promoted to brigadier general and assumed the additional duty of assistant chief of staff for operations of the Northwest African Air Forces. In December 1943 he was appointed director of operations of the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces at Algiers, moving with it to Caserta, Italy, two months later. General Norstad retired from the USAF on December 31, 1963. After his military retirement, he became the Chief Executive Officer and President of Owens Corning from 1963 until 1972 and also served on the Board of Directors of Rand Corporation.…
