Ancien collaborateur de Dumas pour plusieurs de ses romans, Gaspard de Cherville (1819-1898) commença assez tard une activité littéraire autonome : après un roman de 1862 sous son nom propre (Les Aventures d'un chien de chasse), il publia ensuite des romans et des récits consacrés à la chasse, à la vie des champs et à l'éducation populaire. Il dirigea une publication de luxe intitulée La Vie à la campagne et donna sous le même titre une série de lettres dans Le Temps.
