L'autore parte da una delle più diffuse obiezioni, con cui si contestava al cinema ogni possibilità artistica: è una mera riproduzione meccanica della realtà, si diceva, per sua natura negata a ogni raggiungimento creativo. La serrata analisi di Arnheim mostra esattamente il contrario: il cinema non ha nulla di naturalistico, l'immagine filmica differisce da quella reale. Sono proprio questi «fattori differenzianti» a costituire i «mezzi formativi» del cinema, i suoi mezzi artistici: ad esempio, quei «salti di tempo e di spazio» che il film ha in comune con tutta l'arte moderna.
