Oblong black paper portfolio folder: H 22.75cm x L 40.75. Laid-in folder is artist's handwritten letter on unlined standard 8.5"x11" stationery dated May 29, 1957 to "Charlotte and Bill" (possibly a maternal aunt and uncle) with nineteen lines total (three paragraphs) including "Love | Jim." as a two-line valediction; entire letter on single side of sheet which is creased and worn along lower right half but not affecting text. Portfolio comprised of total of twelve unbound single-sided sheets paged as [2], 1-9, [1] with italicized text taken from the Book of Isaiah and featuring a total of ten b/w wood engravings by Van Dyk. Touch of soiling to title leaf recto but otherwise sheets are clean; deckle fore-edges. Colophon states: "Designed in the Department of Design of Yale University by James Van Dyk. This book has been set in Monotype 14 point Garamond Italic. Printed at the Printing-Office of the Yale University Press. OCLC only locates copies at Yale and NYPL. James Van Dyk was a graduate design student at Yale and studied under Josef Albers. Van Dyk (who occasionally signed work as "Van Dijk" but not with this portfolio) taught at University of Pennsylvania and exhibited at MoMA in 1962 which retains a work in their permanent collection with several others held by other museums.
