La publication qui accompagne l'exposition homonyme se propose d'explorer l'intérêt de Riopelle pour le nord du Canada et sa production artistique. Mettant l'accent sur les très belles séries qu'il a réalisées dans les années 1970, qu'il s'agisse d'oeuvres d'art ou de matériaux d'archives, l'ouvrage s'attache à une période parti…culièrement dynamique durant laquelle Jean-Paul Riopelle effectua plusieurs voyages dans ces territoires pour pêcher, chasser et s'immerger dans la nature. Le nord du Canada, sa végétation et les communautés indigènes qui y vivent ont constitué de puissants sujets d'inspiration pour l'artiste, ils ont élargi ses influences intellectuelles et artistiques et ont nourri son imagination. Ce volume permettra de contempler des oeuvres moins connues, inédites, et de suivre l'évolution du parcours artistique de Riopelle très lié au Nord, aux territoires boréaux et polaires et aux cultures - matérielles ou non - des Indiens canadiens. Par ailleurs, il met en lumière la manière dont Riopelle prend ses distances avec des oeuvres qui représentent la nature comme élément identitaire de la nation canadienne : l'artiste est porteur d'une vision unique et personnelle, capable d'évoquer de manière visuelle ce territoire particulier dans un dialogue entre réel et imaginaire. La centaine d'oeuvres présentées dans le livre (peintures, sculptures, gravures et travaux réalisés en technique mixte) prendront place dans un récit en quatre grandes parties (La nordicité canadienne vue de Paris ; L'expérience du Nord ; Emprunter au Nord ; Le Nord et l'art) dont les thèmes seront approfondis grâce aux contributions de spécialistes.
