Early newspaper clipping ("Consumption of Morphine Cut Down 85 Pct.") laid in between pp. 24 and 25, leaf of manuscript notes in pencil (inscribed on both sides) taken during a 1934 lecture by the author, paperclipped to terminal two terminal leaves (paperclip removed). Occasional marginal notes in pencil. Offsetting from newspaper clipping, wear and rust stains from paperclip. Wrappers moderately worn. Very good. An in-depth educational tract on the history, profile, and dangers of illicit drug (especially opiate) use and addiction, profusely illustrated with contemporary photographic images of addicts, smugglers, dealers, and their gear. The author, Earle Albert Rowell (1881-1962), was a California-based Seventh-Day Adventist social reformer; at the time of the book's publication, he served as the state organizer for the California White Cross Anti-Narcotics Society. "When we consider that the United States uses more of these crime-inducing opiates than all of the leading nations of Europe combined, we begin to understand why there are more murders in a single American city than in all of the countries of Europe put together" - page 46 (quoted on rear wrapper). …
