Soft Flex Covers w Cloth Spine. Condition: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. Modern reprint, no edition stated. 134 pages. Paper / Soft cover reprint edition in very good or better condition, slight wear to edges. Overall good copy of this scarce title. Excellent source, informative and enjoyable reading. A good book to read and keep on hand. Or would make a great gift for the fan / reader in your life. Preface, and notes are in English, remaining TEXT IS IN GREEK. About the author: William Henry Denham Rouse was a Calcutta-born Englishman who became the most learned teacher of Greek and Latin in his time. For a quarter of a century he headed the Perse School in Cambridge, where he made certain that each boy left with a conversational competence in the languages of Homer and Cicero. When he died in 1950 at 86, he left behind him first-rate, down-to-earth translations of The Odyssey and The Iliad that virtually returned Homer's classics to the common man. Also left behind, but then unpublished, was his last work, a translation of still another of the world's great books. The Great Dialogues of Plato. Classicists may continue to give their allegiance to the translation of Greek Scholar Benjamin Jowett (1817-93), but the plain reader will find that Rouse has given him a great legacy of philosophy in language that hews to simple clarity. Socrates himself; wrote Rouse in an introduction, described his object as that of a midwife, to bring other men's thoughts to birth. Socrates never wrote, but after his death a brilliant pupil named Plato wrote down his master's oral comments and arguments. In Rouse's pages Socrates' strength of mind, his dedication to philosophical truth, are borne in on the modern reader with something of the power that impressed and disturbed the ancient Greeks. Some b/w Illustrations (illustrator). Book. …

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. This is a UK hardcover published by Ernest Nister in 1907. The photos show the condition better than I can describe, however overall I am grading as Very Good Plus / Near Fine. The dust jacket is complete and in Very Good condition, the exception being that the top corners are scuffed and the foot of the spine is chipped along its length. The book has a straight spine, sharp corners and firm spine ends. The boards are clean and bright. The page edges are toned but the text block is clean aside from the odd fox spot and the binding is tight. There are numerous black and white illustrations, and six colour illustrations. There is no evidence of a printing history but research indicates this was published in 1907. It would appear NOT to be a first printing because the first edition had green boards apparently. Walter Paget (illustrator). …

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 321pp.; 31 x 22.6 cm. Linen backed pale blue paper covered boards. Label printed in black pasted to spine. Published London: The De La More Press, 1904 "Though it is the most beautiful book in the English language, I am not citing it for its decorative purposes but its narrative quality." — EP, ABC of Reading "Ezra Pound has written that he doesn't think anyone can know anything at all about the art of lucid narrative in English if he hasn't seen all fifteen books of Ovid' Elizabethan translator, Arthur Golding. That is a good way of putting it, and yet I imagine Golding has rarely been read cover to cover." — Robert Lowell One of the most appeasing editions of Golding's Metamorphoses (a translation elsewhere known as Shakespeare's Ovid for its noticeable influence on the Bard), no. 229 of 300 copies printed on hand-made paper by The De La More Press in London. A beautiful copy, light edge-wear and staining to the boards, the paper label on spine curling a bit, but inside fine & throughout. With the bookplate of Colin Stanley Crosse to ffep, and a further of the Royal College of Art, College Library to ffpd, with their crimp to the title page. A book that was for Pound, alongside Confucius, his religion, and an immensely important text for the reading of The Cantos.…

16pp, 8vo. Stapled pamphlet. In fair condition, lightly aged, covers dusty and spotted, staples slightly rusted. P.2 carries an announcement of the joint publication by 'Mr. Heinemann' and the Macmillan Company of New York 'of a new series of Greek and Latin texts with English translations on the opposite page and brief biographical prefaces. The series takes its name from Mr. James Loeb, originator of the idea, []'. The page gives details of the plan, and p.15 carries a 'List of the First Twenty Volumes, 'Ready in September' and 'Ready in November'. P.16 gives details of those involved in the library: the two editors Page and Rouse, and the ten members of the 'Advisory Board'. Pp.3-14 carry Rouse's essay 'Machines or Mind?', in which he attempts to answer the question 'What is the use of Greek and Latin literature?' He begins an impassioned response with the counter-question: 'What is the use of machines?' His conclusion is that there is a question 'which the world has not faced': 'So much time has been saved, that thousands of people who used to be working all day now have leisure; and they do not know what to do with it. They are often ignorant, violent, intolerant, and they are so many, that the few wiser who ought to guide them are forced to follow. To what end?' No copy in the BL, and only three copies on Library Hub Discover (the former COPAC): at Manchester, Liverpool and the Institute of Classical Studies. Now scarce.…
