Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Crown 8vo. 221pp. Handsome contemporary binding of brown morocco with five raised bands, intricate gilt tooling, and inner gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Each woodcut is accompanied by an unprinted tissue protector, several of which exhibit a fraction of edge-loss. The binding cracked at the upper hinge, with the half-title and frontispiece somewhat tender as a result. An inked inscription to the front free endpaper reads "Charles L. S. Cotton left to him by A. Lankester 1901". A trace of very light wear to the morocco at several extremities. A very good copy. Comprises Allingham's lengthy new poem 'The Music Maker', plus 'Day and Night Songs' series one (thirty-one poems, which was originally published a year previously) and series two (thirty poems, some of which originally appeared in a withdrawn volume form 1850, and in assorted periodicals), all splendidly enhanced by these early Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood woodcut contributions. Uncommon. "Those excellent painters who on my behalf have submitted their genius to the risks of wood-engraving will, I hope, pardon me for placing a word of sincere thanks in the book they have honoured with this evidence, through art, of their valued friendship" - from Allingham's preface. Dante Gabriel Rosetti. (illustrator).…
