Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an intriguing account of a budding romance between a circus clown and a missionary. Set against the backdrop of a steamship voyage, the tale unfolds as a young woman befriends Teddy Catty, a humble but deeply religious clown. Witnessing Catty's unwavering faith despi…te his unconventional occupation, the author delves into the complexities of religious expression and the unexpected paths people take in their spiritual journeys. The book explores the contrast between Catty's heartfelt devotion and the more conventional religious practices of the missionary, offering a nuanced perspective on the nature of true piety. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition. first printing (per single publishing statement upon copyright page) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. [8], 317 pages. Hardcover; H 19.5cm x L 13.5cm. Lacks dust jacket. Red cloth with black stamped lettering upon spine and front board, cloth rubbed and soiled with some staining particularly to rear board, spine… slightly cocked with ends bumped and minor fraying, slight nicking to cloth at bottom board corners. Some tearing to surface paper along rear hinge; both front and rear hinges have some play but remain fairly firm. Ownership inscription of Della MacLeod dated July 1920 - New York and "From S.V.R." all written lengthwise along fore-edge of front pastedown with some ink smudged onto opposing recto of front free endpaper. Dedication page features the Roseboro's three line signed inscription: "Love, . Della MacLeod | from | Viola Roseboro'" with "May" written immediately below in faded ink by a different hand. Occasional mild foxing on interior pages; bottom corners of pages 101-110 and 243-252 creased. The Library of Congress online catalogue cites a writer by the name of Della Campbell MacLeod, an author of three books published between 1913 and 1922 so that is indeed likely to be the inscribee. OCLC cites only eight copies of STORMS OF YOUTH among member libraries. Although she wrote at least three other novels - "Old Ways And New" (1892), "Joyous Heart" (1903), and "Players and Vagabonds" (1904), Viola Roseboro' (1857-1945) is best remembered as the powerful literary editor of McClure's and Collier's magazines where she worked with such important figures as Booth Tarkington, Willa Cather, Rupert Hughes, O. Henry (William Sydney Porter), and Julian Street among many others. Only a good copy but a quite uncommon novel which is quite scarce when with Roseboro's inscription.
