Hardcover. 1st U.S. Written about 1905, after Don Tarquinio, and considered libellous: 1st printing from the typescript From the front flap of the jacket: "The publication of this novel by Frederick Rolfe, self-styled Baron Corvo, is at last possible. Its real-life portraits 'drawn with Rolfe's usual brushful of acid,' caused threats of libel action soon after its writing around 1905, and no publisher dared issue it. It was long thought lost. Recently, when most of the models for its thinly-disguised characters were no longer alive to file suit, two typescripts turned up, one the the Harvard Library and the other in the Walpole Collection at the Bodleian at Oxford." Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First Edition. [Modern Literature] FIRST EDITION, first impression. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[8] 344. Publisher's white cloth, with gilt titles to purple spine, and a purple design to upper. With the matching dust-jacket, priced at 30s. A crisp copy, showing light spotting to edges and title page. Jacket heavily toned, with wear and chipping to edges, especially spine. Very good. Completed around the year 1902, Baron Corvo's first novel was roundly rejected for publication by every major publisher until an edition of 2000 copies was nearly printed in 1909. With both printer and author facing imminent bankruptcy the project collapsed and the book remained unpublished until this edition was mooted in the 1960s.
