Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Visitors to Glasgow in search of Mackintosh's buildings will have little difficulty in finding the School of Art, or even The Hill House at Helensburgh. But where are the tea rooms, the Art Club, the Daily Record building, Ruchill Church Hall? And outside Glasgow, where is Auchenibert, Windyhill, all of the gravestones? This guide will lead you to them, with access details and a commentary on each entry by Roger Billcliffe, author of several standard works on Mackintosh. Each entry is accompanied by recent or contemporary photographs, full addresses and directions and, for those difficult to find commissions, a full GPS location. Mackintosh is not just about Glasgow and this book covers all the surviving sites, from East Wemyss in Fife through to Argyll in the west, Comrie in Perthshire and Mackintosh s few English commissions in Northampton, London and Sussex. An indispensable addition to the Mackintosh literature. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: includes dust-jacket. DETAILS: good dust-jacket, looks great but thin old moisture stain along bottom edge apparent from reverse, very good square black cloth. BILLCLIFFE, ROGER. Mackintosh textile designs. New York: Taplinger, 1982, 80pp., . Mackintosh, Charles Rennie, 1868-1928. -- Presented here for the first time, in striking black-and-white and color illustrations, are Mackintosh's textile designs, properly assessed as a coherent body of work and at last given the critical attention they deserve. The names of many of the best British designers of the last hundred years or so are kept in the public eye through the continuing production of their designs for textiles. William Morris and C.F.A. Voysey. for instance, had considerable success in their lifetimes as fabric designers, and many of their designs are still available today. One of the reasons that Charles Rennie Mackintosh's work with textiles is not so widely known - unlike his architecture, furniture, and, lately, his watercolors - is that none of his fabrics can now be bought. Fortunately, a large group of his original drawings for the textile firms of Foxton's and Sefton's, designed during his stay in Chelsea between 1915 and 1923, have survived in the Hunterian Art Gallery at Glasgow University, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the British Museum. Now, in this authoritative new study, Roger Billdiffe shows that with the furniture and interior designs made after 1915 the textile designs form a whole new style for Mackintosh. The designs fall into two basic categories -one based on organic, mainly floral, patterns; the other using more abstract and geometric shapes. Some of the floral designs are stylizations of tobacco flowers, roses, or tulips, perhaps intended as dress fabrics. Other designs combine stylized organic shapes with architectural motifs, reflecting elements of Mackintosh's contemporary architectural projects, for example the exciting remodelling for W.J. Bassett-Lowke of 78 Demgate, Northampton. The abstract designs are totally different in mood, consisting mainly of simple stripes of bold color or lozenges and diamonds in geometric grids, with consistent use of black to produce dramatic contrast, characteristic of much design of the Jazz Age. Few, if any, designers of the period were producing such advanced work at this time, and Mackintosh's textile designs - together with his furniture at 78 Demgate - look forward to much of the work shown at the great Paris exhibition of decorative arts of 1925. This book will enable students of European art and design during and after the First World War to reassess this important phase in Mackintosh's life. ISBN 0800850599.
