First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Illustrated with 12 black and white full-page captioned photos and with a small oval photo of Andrew Roddan on the first page beneath which is a rubber stamped image which reads "Very Sincerely Andrew Roddan." Lapping blue patterned wrappers printed in black. Wrappers faded around the edges, a few minor dings to the lapping edges, all photos in fine condition, small blacked out spot near top of first page, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. This is an extensive work on hobos in Canada and the work of the Rev. Andrew Roddan and First United Church of Vancouver, B.C.,"The Church of the Open Door," to minister to their needs. Includes a description of Kagawa visiting the Jungle. Quite an amazing piece! In Depression-era Vancouver the best known radical religious figure was undoubtedly the Reverend Andrew Roddan of First United Church, whose work with the unemployed earned him the title, ¿Apostle to the Poor.¿ Roddan is best known for "God in the Jungles", a book documenting the ¿flesh and blood¿ stories of the homeless men who built several makeshift settlements ¿ known as ¿ jungles¿ ¿ in Vancouver. Appearing in December 1931 and selling more than 2,000 copies in its first month, "God in the Jungles" came to occupy a special place in the public memory as the authoritative account of transient life on Canada¿s west coast. To demonstrate the mass devastation wrought by greed, Roddan used the figure of the transient, a man forced to live in a morally and physically degrading environment and yet still fundamentally human and capable of redemption. Their stories, collected and made public by First United, symbolized the spiritual crisis that plagued the Western world. Date determined from the contents.
