Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st. xiv, 213 pages, [16] pages of plates, illustrations (some colour); 24 cm. Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Small erasure mark-rubbing/front free endpaper. Fine DJ. *** "One hundred years ago, the crude realism of early cinematic exercises caused shockw…aves among audiences - some even panicked. On one occasion, read a news report from the time, an old lady in the audience, quite unable to suppress a scream, started up in her seat and tried to scramble out, knocking over others on her way. This sort of reaction was not uncommon - on a screen that might have featured nothing more than minute-long dips of a running horse or a moving train, what modern viewers might see as a pale shadow of the explosive, full-colour blockbusters of 1995." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Introduction, by James H. Billington; Foreword, by Martin Scorsese; 1. Pieces in a Puzzle: Prehistory of the motion picture; 2. Sorcerer and Apprentice: Edison, Dickson, and the Kinetoscope; 3. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 25.5 x 30.5 cm.; 1.6 kg.; 191 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket shows edge wear, scuffs and scrathes on the front cover, spine and back cove…r. A few wear marks on the front cover. Ex-libris stamp at the bottom of the front free endpaper Remaining interior in very good condition.; A pioneering publication which deals with the most famous series - the Seishu gishi den (1847-48) and its sequel the Seishu gishin den (1848) of the forty-seven masterless samurai (ronin) by artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). The true 18th-century tale of revenge by forty-seven ronin for the death of their lord was enormously popular in Japan: it was dramatised for the Kabuki theatre and its heroes were often depicted in ukiyo-e prints. Kuniyoshi was a master in the genre of warrior prints, and his series expressively portrays these warrior 'folk heroes'. Dr. Weinberg's book also includes translations of the texts which appear on the prints and which recount each hero's exploits. In addition, there are photographs of the relics of the masterless samurai and the ruins of their castle in Ako.
