Heath and Company, 1954. Octavo (8 x 5.5 in.), 193 pp. Illustrated in blue and black throughout. Printed in the United States of America. First…Edition (1954) of this midcentury classroom anthology for junior and senior high school students, compiled by educational psychologists Ruth Strang (Teachers College, Columbia University) and Ralph Roberts (University of Alabama). Designed to encourage both literacy and moral reflection, the volume groups short fiction into sections such as 'Teen-Agers Today,' 'Science Stories,' 'True Sports Stories,' and 'Suspense and Mystery.' Contributors include S. I. Kishor, Loula Grace Erdman, R. Austin Freeman, H. W. Magee, and Walter Farley (The Black Stallion), among others. The lively two-tone illustrations capture the optimism and realism of 1950s youth culture. Condition: Very Good. Blue-green striped cloth boards with white and navy lettering; moderate rubbing and shelfwear, corners lightly bumped. Tight binding. Endpapers toned, with Benjamin Franklin High School (Philadelphia) property stamp and checkout ledger dated 1957-58, adding period authenticity. Interior pages clean, illustrations vivid, light age toning only. Copyright ©1954 by D.C. Heath with no subsequent printings stated, confirming a first printing. Ruth Strang (1895-1971) was a pioneering educational psychologist at Teachers College, Columbia University, whose research shaped mid-20th-century theories of adolescent development and reading instruction. Ralph Roberts, professor of education at the University of Alabama, co-edited numerous anthologies promoting curiosity, ethics, and literacy among teenage readers during the postwar expansion of U.S. public education.
