La realización de una obra como la que presentamos, que enumere, describa e ilustre todas las plantas nativas y naturalizadas de la provincia, requiere de varias etapas, cada una de ellas de esfuerzo sostenido en el tiempo. La primer etapa es el muestreo sistemático de…todas las áreas y diferentes ambientes, Así es que desde 1978 se han realizado exploraciones a lo largo de prácticamente todos los caminos existentes. Estas areas se muestrearon no una vez, sino varias, debido a que las plantas de una época pueden no estar en otra, e incluso durante los años secos la cosecha no es completa. Más adelante, incursionamos en áreas sin caminos y, así llegamos a cubrir a lomo de mula o a caballo zonas deshabitadas, como el oeste del departamento Calingasta hasta el límite con Chile o el interior de la Sierra de Valle Fértil. Al comienzo de este estudio San Juan era la provincia menos conocida desde el punto de vista botánico, mientras que ahora tiene una buena representación en las colecciones de plantas que existen en los institutos especializados del país. Las muestras coleccionadas, más de 10,000, con dos o más duplicados cada una, deben secarse ya en el viaje y luego desinfectarse para preservarlas de los insectos. Cada ejemplar debe llevar una etiqueta que lo identifique unívocamente y mencione su lugar de origen, fecha de collección y quiénes la efectuaron, como así también varios datos acerca de la planta y el ambiente. Sobre esta base, los diferentes colaboradores van gradualmente reuniendo datos sobre los diferentes grupos y redactando los originales de los textos a publicar. Estos textos sufren permanentes correcciones y adiciones, de acuerdo con los nuevos hallazgos, a la nueva bibliografía especializada, o ajustándose a la evolución del criterio del especialista. Un paso posterior o a veces simultáneo es la confección de las ilustraciones. En algunas ocasiones por los mismos autores, pero mayormente por artistas especializados en el dibujo de plantas. Estos dibujos complementan las descripciones y permiten una mejor comprensión de las mismas. Los detalles que muestran permiten interpreter estructuras que en gran parte no podrían mostrarse con fotografías. Para esta obra también se obtuvieron autorizaciones de reproducir figuras de otras publicaciones, con el consiguiente ahorro de tiempo y esfuerzo. Con este tomo completamos aproximadamente dos tercios de la obra; los dos primeros comprendieron los helechos, gimnospermas y las dicotiledóneas dialipétalas; éste contiene las monocotiledóneas y en un futuro más o menos cercano esperamos poder presenter el último proyectado, con las dicotiledóneas gamopétalas. 0.0.
