Segni di lettura al dorso, peraltro ottima copia -- L'ampiezza della riforma alla quale Otto Wagner (1841-1918)…ha lavorato è tale da consentire l'attenuazione che proprio egli ha spianato la strada maestra dell'architettura moderna. Né qui si parla di strada solo in senso figurato, giacché ogni suo progetto, ogni suo intervento è sostanzialmente subordinato a una lettura della città, la quale a due riprese si è concretata in una visione urbanistica complessiva, commisurata alla scala metropolitana di Vienna: una prima volta nel 1892-93, quando vinse il concorso per il piano regolatore generale, poi nel 1910-11, quando generalizzò il caso della capitale austriaca nel progetto di una città a crescita illimitata. E precisamente sulle valenze urbanistiche di ogni area d'intervento egli declinerà tutta la sua opera, essendo la città il riflesso più immediato di quelle condizioni della vita moderna che egli erige a fondamento di una nuova arte del costruire.
