Condition: as new. New York : Monacceli Press, 1997. Paperback. 363 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. Proceedings of a conference in honor of Philip Johnson held Feb. 1-3, 1996 at Columbia University and the Museum of Modern Art. Includes bibliographical references. -- This is the documentation -- transcripts, essays, and images -- of the proceedings of an influential conference held in honor of Philip Johnson. Hosted in New York City in February 1996 by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, together with the Columbia University School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and the Museum of Modern Art, the conference was organized by Phyllis Lambert and Peter Eisenman and convened by Robert Somol. The international roster of diverse participants included historians, theorists, critics, and architects who debated such themes as the critical dynamics between museums as institutions and the material they represent; the issue of "high" and "low" in art and architecture; and the potential to expand the concept of the avant-garde within the borders of the discipline. With the intention of developing a specifically architectural discourse of the modernist avant-garde from within and from without the discipline, the participants debated the extent to which the practitioners of the avant-garde in America were interested in the formal rather than the philosophical, political, and economic underpinnings of the European movement, which to date had remained unexamined. They discussed new ways of working and thinking through the problems of modernity as it began to be experienced at the start of the 1920s. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9781885254597. Keywords : ARCHITECTURE, Avant-garde.

Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Founded by partners Sharon Johnston, F.A.I.A. and Mark Lee in 1998, Johnston Marklee is recognized for its diverse portfolio of architecture, engaging the physical and cultural circumstances of each project through a precise synthesis of structural form, materiality, and atmospheric light. The work of the firm pays tribute to a specific Southern Californian interpretation of modernism, and at the same time operates at the intersection of a global and local dialogue. Johnston and Lee have forged a leading role in the cultural discourse around contemporary art and architecture, eliciting design collaborations with distinguished museums, foundations, and artists around the world. Complementing this far-reaching network, the firm's work is recognized for being deeply rooted in the history and foundations of the discipline. Their work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Art Institute of Chicago, Menil Collection, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Architecture Museum of TU Munich. Mark Lee and Sharon Johnston served as Artistic Directors for the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. In 2018 they were named Professors in Practice at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Mark Lee was appointed Chair of the Architecture Department. They have also taught at major universities including Princeton University, the University of California, Los Angeles, the Technical University of Berlin, ETH Zurich, and have held the Cullinan Chair at Rice University and the Frank Gehry Chair at the University of Toronto. A most handsome example of the exceedingly uncommon 2014 print-edition monograph on the firm in the form of the sixty-seventh installment of the noted Spanish architectural journal "2G" additionally SIGNED "Johnston / Mark / Lee" AND DATED 09/28/18" in silver marker at our shop on page 19 showing a flattened diagonal soft crease through the lower foredge corner of the rear cover. Signed by the Architects. Architecture Monograph.
