Good lt. edgeworn orig. brown cloth. Tears in front coated ep. xii, 234 p.; front. (port.); 19.5 cm. Frampton arrived a half hour too late to be included in the trial of the Seven Bishops. `Then the convention came on and in it were very many and learned debates, and as in the Comons' house the throne was declared vacant, so the Lords were runing the same lengths and in the prayers in the house omitted the King and Royal family's names, and one day he being the junior Bishop he was press'd to read in that maner, wch he declined, and being call'd upon by name by the Lord Newport (since Bradford) to read, he said to him, excusez- moi, the other says, my Lord, do you not hear the request? to which the Bishop reply'd, my Lord, do not you understand french? at which a latter Bishop was come in,and so it fell to his share to do that Office. At length came the grand question whether the King had abdicated the government, and the majority giving in to it,he had no more to do but record his dissent by entering his protest, which he was observed to do in much larger characters then he had usually enter'd any other protest. And soon after the Prince and Princess of Orange were declared King and Queen, and an oath appointed to be taken to them. This test wholy excluded him the convention, and left him no more to do for his sovereign then to assist him by his prayers. And having on the thirtieth of January asserted his right, he withdrew into the country there to wait his doom, the deprivation of the mitre and the crown commonly going together. From the first of February he was sequester'd both from the profits of his Bishoprick and the exercise of his office, and this suspension to last till the first of August next ensuing, upon which, if they did not comply, the refusers were to be totally deprived.' (p. 183 f.). Illustrated by Portrait engr. by H. Adlard. Binding is Hardcover.
