First Edition. xiii, 381pp. Marbled white paper over board backed in slate cloth effect paper over board, brick endpapers. Some very trivial rubbing and toning to extremities, small smudge to fore edge. Dust jacket is clipped to front flap, some shelf wear. Raymond Carver contributed his short story 'Neighbors' to this collection. This story, which first appeared in Esquire in 1971, was subsequently dramatized in Robert Altman's 1993 movie 'Short Cuts' with Robert Downey Jr. and Lili Taylor starring. Richard Ford's contributation was 'In Desert Waters' (1976). His first national magazine appearance, this was also published in Esquire. Robert Coover's 'The Elevator' (1967) was an important inspiration for Colson Whitehead's debut novel 'The Intuitionist' (1999). Whitehead, a Pulitzer prize winner for 2020's 'Nickle Boys'cited Coover as someone who gave him '.the license to change history and inhabit different real-life people.'. Signed By Author.
