Plain white print paper wraps; [34] pp. Likely the largest grouping of Pike mnemonics ever assembled.One of the chief attractions in this offering are the two fold-out illustrations (they are identical, both are found in parts issue No.8 but one is a first edition and the other a second.). It is recorded by OCLC but it is recorded as a broadside. The fact we have two copies of it that are bound into two of the pamphlets offered here proves that was not the case originally. As they are quite attractive it is natural that they were separated from the books and offered as broadsides. As can plainly be seen they are nonsensical without the books. Mnemonics (a technique for improving memory by creating associations that are easier to remember) has been lauded and practiced for millennia but it seems that their introduction to the general American public was quite late. In 1844, the Pike brothers adapted old European memory systems for use in America but their additions to that tradition were significant. In Europe at the time mnemonics was often associated with mnemonists; stage acts in which the practitioner seemingly has instant recall about a vast array of facts. The Pikes were more ambitious and wanted their system of mnemonics to be an educational tool found in every school. Their primary publication was Mnemonics Applied to the Acquisition of Knowledge; or the Art of Memory originally issued in 1844. It was issued in a variety of formats (parts, etc.) and taught mnemonics via artificial associations, classification and something they called ?Chronics.? The last item in the list Mnemonics: The Analytical Basis of Classification, and the System of Chronics lays out the ideology behind their system and is thus unlike the other nine publications that were practical in orientation. There were some earlier American mnemonic titles published but they did not seem to gain any traction with the American pubic. The Pike's chief competitor was Francis Fauvel Gouraud who toured the country giving lectures on his system in 1844 His book, Phreno-Mnemotechny; or the Art of Memory, was published a year after the Pike brothers issued their first treatise. The most highly regarded American book on the subject wasn?t published until 1848 Pliny Miles American Mnemotechny, or Art of Memory.It must have been a fad in the 1840s in the US as after that time it went quiet. With the publication of Francis Yates The Art of Memory mnemonics has again gained popularity. But, unquestionably, the Pikes were the best promoters; the many titles and editions are proof of this. Their main book went through at least nine editions. Almost every pamphlet in this offering contains dire warnings by the Pikes to not to be fooled by fake mnemonists. Presumably they made quite a good living at it. But their books have largely disappeared and while well represented in libraries they are rarely found in the trade. One imagines that the children who inherited the Pike?s treatises just found them confusing and discarded them.Most have an ink stamp indicating that they were duplicates from the library of Bernard Zufall. Bernard Zufall (1894-1971) was a vice president at General Electric who was well-known as a collector of printed material related to mnemonics. The collection, comprising over 1,000 titles, was given by Zufa.
