The author's first novel, a young man's tale of life in New York, "about the sort of people I know and am," per the writer. "Young people who have ideas about any number of things, ideas that don't fit into any grand scheme. If there is anything they all agree on, it is that being together and talkilng together and being fond of each other is a very good thing, perhaps the only thing in the world." Elsewhere he states that the book " is not a slice of life, nor a hard-boiled novel, nor is it about a lost generation.
