The author of this source seeks to determine the factors which are responsible for the conversion of individual Navajo to one or another religious sect. This source treats principally the activities of the Mormons, who are settled among the Navajos at Rimrock, and a less conspicuous but also influential sect which he designates 'Galilean.' Through the analysis of survey-sample results and of life-history materials, his interpretation of Navajo conversion experience rests largely upon psychological rather than sociological foundations. Adducing the model of the physical sciences, Robert N. Rapoport and his collaborators argue that this divergence contributes to inhibition of action initiatives, on the one hand, and stagnation in the quest for knowledge, on the other. The author looks at ten projects in which behavioural science researchers collaborate with innovative action agencies in the children's mental health field.
