Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Dial Press; New York, New York; 1980; Second Printing, 1981. 12-1/4", 216 numbered pages. A book of photographs, taken before World War I, both black and white as well as color images, of "things of interest and significance". Taken between 1905 and…1915, the photographer/chemist Prokudin-Gorskii had hoped to use the photos to educate the youth of Russia, but the war drove him into exile with his glass plates. Those images, of a lost time and place, are the basis of this book. There are 7 chapters: Village life; Tolstoy & Yasnaya Polyana; Rivers and Waterways; Churches and Ikons; the Urals; the Caucasus; and Turkestan & Samarkand. Within each chapter, after one page of describing the locales, the photos alternate--2 pages of black and white followed by 2 pages of color. The book is free of edge dings and corner bumps; heel of spine is bumped with slight creasing of the gutter and gutter ridges at the heel, all edges are virtually free of wear; both boards are clean as is the spine. There is no fading. Except for original owner's name/date inked on the back of the title page, the interior is completely free of writing, stray marks and stains of any sort. The jacket is of VG quality--it has no tears, chips or fading; there are two thin scratches on the rear panel and a crease at the top of the front panel. What it did have at one time, and which since has been removed, is masking tape on the reverse side, along both top and bottom edges, at the spine and both front and rear folds. The tape has made the jacket just a tad bit stiff but the tape has not caused any discoloration to the book or to the jacket because of its dark colors. Due to the large size and heavy weight of this item, extra postage will be needed. Because I do not know how to do that via ABE, I have simply added $5 to the sale price to help cover this extra expense. Color & B/w Photos By P.-G. (illustrator).
