It is a collection of correspondence to his wife, Frances Eliza Grenfell Kingsley. This copy, issued in 1958 by Princeton University Press, presents 24 letters written to his wife, giving his observations (pro and con) of America. While in the United States, Kingsley met Longfellow, Mark Twain, President Grant, and the Governor-General of Canada. This is the First Edition. Charles Kingsley, (1819 - 1875) was ". an Anglican minister, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives, which failed, but encouraged later working reforms. He was a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin." . "Kingsley was a prolific author, and much involved in various social improvement activities. Some of his many fictional works are: "Yeast" ; "Alton Locke"; "Hypatia"; "Westward Ho!; "The Water Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby". Aside from his fictional creations, Kingsley published sermons, wrote a few histories, and a variety of other works. In 1859 he was appointed chaplain to Queen Victoria.
