Contact seller5-star sellerVintage reference photograph from the 1923 film, showing actress Lillian Gish and three elderly nuns. Provenance stamp and annotations in manuscript ink and pencil on the verso. Based on the 1909 play by Frances Marion Crawford and Walter Hackett, based in turn on Crawford's 1909 novel, about a woman who joins a convent after le…arning that her sweetheart has been killed in an African expedition, only to later discover that he is still alive. The second of four adaptations of the play, following the 1915 silent film starring Viola Allen, and followed by a 1933 sound film and a 1960 Mexican film. The film also marked actor Ronald Colman's first major film role, paving the way for his long tenure as a leading man in Hollywood. Shot on location in Naples, Lago Montagna, and Rome, Italy, and in Algeria. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus.
