First printing. Award-winning book written for young adults about the remarkable life of Edomonia Lewis, also known as "Wildfire", an American sculptor, with a dual heritage of African-American and Native American culture (Chippewa / Ojibwa) , who became one of the first women of color making a living as a professional sculptor in Western history and who gave to the world a visual tribute to her people. Born free in Upstate New York, educated (due to her brother's success in California during the gold rush) at Oberlin, she traveled first to Boston where she met many notable abolitionists including Horace Greeley and Frederick Douglass, but she spent most of her career in working in Rome, Italy. In addition to the biographical information, this also describes some of her lost works, and the fortuitous finding of some thought to be lost. A title in the People in Focus Book series. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper. In addition, a brief holographic note from the author is laid in. Illustrated with photographs. List of sculptures referenced, notes, bibliography, index. 128 pp. Carter G. Woodson Book Award sticker on the front cover of the dustjacket. An uncommon title, especially in hardcover and signed. Fine in fine dust jacket.…
