When the Commonwealth Government assented to the War Precautions Act in 1914, it was decided that people who were of German origin or descent, as well as those from countries allied with Germany, might be a security risk, and so places had to be found to detain them. At first people were detained in army barracks or training camps but the government soon realised they would need more permanent accommodation and set up camps in specific locations, one of these being the German Concentration Camp at Holsworthy in the Liverpool district. As early as September 1914 about 100 seamen who had been taken from German and English ships arrived at the camp. Others soon followed from various locations. . .''(see 'The Dictionary of Sydney', online); letzendlich waren es bis zu 6.000 Internierte . . .

Binder. Condition: Very good. Quarto. Clasped folder/bunder with 28pp. of typed pages, plus eighteen cardstock leaves of textile samples. Overall in very good condition with very minor wear. A typescript which contains instructions and best practices for identifying textiles and fabrics using various methods, including observati…on, solvents, burning, and microscopy. It appears to be a collegiate-level project, with some experiments described. Most interesting is the group of samples, which mostly measure about 6" x 6" or thereabouts, and have hand-drawn diagrams of the patterns below. Possibly produced in the context of forensics? A nice effort at visualizing textile patterns at the granular level. We could not find any information about the author(s), nor did we locate any likely copies in OCLC at the time of listing.
