"Mars was no paradise, but to Dr. Tony Hellman it meant a second chance for man-and to Hugo Brenner it meant a world to plunder. Tony was the leading member of Sun Lake Colony, a band of frontier-extending Earth people-intrepid space pioneers. Brenner was the planet's most powerful magnate, and operator whose vast wealth was based on Earthmen's tragic addiction to the vicious drug, marcaine. When Brenner accused the Sun Lakers of stealing a hundred kilograms of the Martian drug, the colony was threatened with extermination unless the thief was found and the marcaine returned. Tony and his fellow colonists saw their second chance fading. Brenner's success would mean the end of their better world."; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Volume 44. 115 Pages. Cover shows some wear. Interior text pages are flawless. Working with hand tools and draft animals, mid-nineteenth century Maine farmers converted almost half the state's forests to farmlands, and over the next century much of this cleared land returned to forest. Today, a historic mix of farmland and forestland makes up an essential ingredient in the iconic Maine landscape. This issue takes up the relation between farm and forest - a connection far more complicated than the casual observer might imagine. The first article is by James Francis presenting evidence that Native people on the Penobscot River used fire as a management tool to clear land and create an environment more conducive to their economy. Jacqueline Field next discusses the rise and fall of silk production as an agricultural occupation that relied on large-scale cultivation of mulberry trees. Despite the energy devoted to this enterprise, silk production was ultimately abandoned in Maine, and thus Field ends with a question that informs our next two articles: what happens when farmlands return to forests? Kristen Hoffman and Theresa Kerchner explore this question using case studies drawn from a mid-coast Maine island and an upland farm in Wayne. They show that the 19th century was marked by great transitions in the agricultural economy, and that these transitions are still visible in the forested landscapes of Maine.
