She began telling stories at a young age, encouraged by her brother who gained popularity by telling her spooky stories to his classmates at boarding school. ** Eight of the stories in this collection are from the first and second editions of "The Relations and What They Related" (1902), in which each guest at a Christmas family gathering tells a story to keep themselves amused, while waiting for their wealthy cousin to arrive from Canada. ** The stories include supernatural mysteries with a twist, reminiscent of Roald Dahl's "Tales of the Unexpected". She was sent by her parents to be educated in England, but returned to India where she married an engineer, Charles Perrin, who worked for the India Public Works Department. Charles was put in charge of building an aqueduct in the jungle, and so Alice Perrin took to writing as a way to alleviate boredom. Her collection of ghost stories, "East of Suez" (1901), was compiled and published after her return to England, and she continued to write novels and stories about her time in India. ** The title story, "The Sistrum", has a junk-shop collector finding an African musical instrument which, having been used in sacrificial ceremonies, carries its own memories. Other stories include: "Caulfield's Crime", "Chunia, Ayah", "Powers of Darkness", "The Admiral's Dog", "Old Ayah", "The Brahminy Bull" and "The Footsteps in the Dust". The original publication was a cheaply-bound "yellowback", designed to be sold at railway stations and the like, with the result that very few have survived. This new collection includes the first book publication of another story, "The Blue Room". Lettice Galbraith, born Lizzie Susan Gibson, was a short-story writer and novelist. She tackled social issues affecting women, such as marriage and independence. But she returned every now and then to occult matters, such as in the 1906 "psychic detective" novel, "Burnt Spices."
