This volume contains a transcription of Eden Colvile's letters sent from Canada to Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) officials in London. Eden Colvile (1819-1893) was an English businessman and governor of HBC. He was the son of Andrew Colvile who had worked as Deputy Governor of HBC. Eden took over the duties of another HBC governor, George Simpson. As HBC governor, Eden was tasked with handling a variety of conflicts including racial and cultural tensions between the different residents of Red River Colony in Rupert's Land, the Guilleume Sayer trial, and Foss-Pelly trial. Following the main collection of Eden's correspondence to London is a collection of his letters addressed to Simpson. In both collections of his letters, Eden writes about a variety of subjects such as HBC administrative matters, noted HBC officials, and residents and politics of Red River Colony. In his Introduction, Morton writes about the general sociopolitical and racial dynamics in Red River Colony, the agricultural prospects and difficulties in the Colony, and notable individuals associated with Red River Colony. Morton discusses ethnic groups in the region such as the Metis, French Canadians, and Kildonan Scots. He addresses the importance of religion among various groups and tensions between Protestants and Roman Catholics. Morton paints a detailed picture of daily life in Red River Colony such as observed social customs, animals that could be raised there, and crops that could withstand the brutal winters of the region. Vol. I contains transcriptions of the journal entries kept at one of HBC's principal trading posts, Cumberland House, from 1775-1779 as well as entries kept at Cumberland's outpost from 1778-1779. Vol. II contains transcriptions of journal entries kept at both Cumberland House and its outpost from 1779-1782. Authors of the original journals include Matthew Cocking and William Tomison Master. A collection of reprinted journal entries from 1783-1785 relating to the Hudson's Bay Company's posts in the Southern Department of Hudson Bay. Excerpt from Preface: "This is the first volume to be published by the Record Society which deals specifically with the affairs of the posts at the Bottom of the Bay--the Southern Department as it was later called. There the earliest posts established by the Company were set up and there the earliest effects of French competition were felt." Contents are listed as follows: "Preface," "Introduction," "Moose Fort Journal, 1783-84," "Moose Fort Journal, 1784-85," "Appendix A: Moose Fort Correspondence Books, 1783-84 and 1784-85," "Appendix B: Posts," "Appendix C: Biographies," "Appendix D: Standard of Trade, 1783-84," "and "Index." The Hudson's Bay Company was founded in 1670 as a fur trading company. HBC once controlled a commercial monopoly throughout the entirety of Rupert's Land, a territory expressly formed for HBC's monopoly. Rupert's Land also comprised the Hudson Bay drainage basin. The Canadian government gained control of Rupert's Land in 1870 following negotiations with HBC. HBC is still in business to this day as Canada's largest and oldest corporation. Today, HBC is commonly referred to as "The Bay" and has many brick-and-mortar retail stores as well as an online store. HBC has since changed its product line to reflect current interests, and as of 2023, no longer sells animal fur products.

This volume contains the transcription of an autobiographical account by James Isham (1716-1761), an Anglo-Canadian chief factor (master) who worked for Hudson's Bay Company at York Fort and Fort Prince of Wales. Isham provides one of the most comprehensive accounts of the Canadian frontier and HBC's activities during the eighteenth century. In 1732, Isham was sent to York Fort when he was 16 years old to work as a clerk or bookkeeper. As a clerk, he was commended for his sobriety and upstanding character by the master of the fort and eventually worked his way up to chief factor himself. Isham's account is filled with a wealth of information about various aspects of Canadian frontier life. He also drew a few sketches to accompany his writings. His account begins with a brief dictionary of English words and phrases and their phonetic translations in Cree. According to Rich, this period in Canadian history was marked by relatively amicable relations between European traders and Indigenous communities based on transactional peace. Isham describes many of the cultural customs of the Cree and other Indigenous tribes. He also describes several Canadian species of birds and other animals. There is also brief description of beaver-hunting methods. Notably, Isham was in charge of both Fort Prince of Wales and York Factory in two separate occasions where exploratory ships trying to find the Northwest Passage had to overwinter at the forts. Each time, this caused great contention between Isham and the captains of the ships. In the latter instance, at York Factory, the crew of one of the ships published an account critical of Isham and HBC. Appended to Isham's main account is his rebuttal to the crew's assertions they made against him and HBC in Henry Ellis's A Voyage to Hudsons Bay in the Dobbs Galley.
