Half-Leather. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Three volumes copiously illustrated in black and white and in colour. Translated by M. Edwardes with an introduction by Grace Rhys Volume I (179pp) covers 1790 to 1817; volume II (164pp) 1818 to 1842; and volume III (157pp) 1843 to 1878. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has all the title panels and five raised bands and decorations. The boards have some light surface wear and marking with some rubbing and a little fraying to the corners. Gilt page edges are quite bright. The frontispiece and tissue paper from Vol. I is unfortunately detached but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. First printing. Heavy item due to the three volumes so there will be an additional postage charge for overseas orders. …

First edition. 12mo. 60 pages. Original gilt-decorated cloth, top edges gilt. Robert Anning Bell (1863-1933) designed, with George Frampton, the altarpiece exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. He was later appointed chief of the design section at the Glasgow School of Art, and from 1918 to 1924 he was professor of design at the Royal College of Art. Bell worked from 1922 on mosaics for the Palace of Westminster. Ties perished else a very good copy.…

Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities (spines faded and worn). Maude Caroline Hathaway bookplate present to the front pastedown. Text is clean and free of marks. Decorative dark green boards with slightly faded gilt titling on front and spine. A little worn at corners and extremities of spine. A few minor marks, very good indeed. Vol 1: Loosely inserted is a Nestle and Kohler collectable, Album Les Merveilles du Monde No 6 (Serie No 135, Timbre No 2) unrelated ephemera. Vol 3 has some loss of material in three 0.5cm patches to top right corner of cover and two smaller patches to bottom left corner. Vol 4 has some white patches around the title on front cover and bottom right corner. Acquired from Maude Lloyd, an admired leading dancer with Ballet Rambert in the 1930s. With her husband, Nigel Gosling a renowned art critic, she later wrote, influential dance books and reviews under the joint pseudonym, 'Alexander Bland'. When Rudolph Nureyev defected in 1961, Margot Fonteyn asked them to befriend him which they gladly did offering him freedom of their house. Gosling edited his autobiography. Nureyev wrote an admiring memoir of him in Observer of the Dance anthologising Goslings reviews, "He and Maude were like my family.".…
