Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. States "First published 1927." This book will close its own text block, but we downgrade to "good" due to the fact there is uneven erosion to the bottom half of the page junctions at pp. 225-228 and again at pp. 254-255 (not affecting any type), which may have been the long-ago work of insects. Pages are also considerably age-browned to edges, though still easily read. The very-good-minus original dust jacket, priced 2/6 to spine, shows a brown stain to head of spine, recto, where a piece of nitrate tape was once laid down to close a small tear. This early John Rhode "spy thriller," set behind the lines in Flanders during the Great War, is hard-to-find in any original jacket. John Rhode was one pseudonym used by the prolific English author Cecil John Charles Street, OBE (1884-1964), who also wrote as Miles Burton and Cecil Waye. Street lived in Seaford and produced four detective novels a year for 37 years. Street's two main series are the Dr. Lancelot Priestley books under the Rhode name, and the Desmond Merrion/Inspector Henry Arnold books under the Burton name. The Priestley books are classics of scientific detection, with the elderly Dr. Priestley demonstrating how apparently impossible crimes have been carried out. The Burton series are more traditional detective fiction with chase scenes and the occasional bit of romance; in fact the hero, amateur investigator Desmond Merrion, meets his wife in the first, "The Secret of High Eldersham" (1930). The author was a serving British army officer who attained the rank of Major, receiving a Military Cross. He also wrote non-fiction, focusing on history and criminology. Street was reticent about his background, but there is evidence that he was born in Gibraltar and may have attended a public school in Berkshire, possibly Wellington College. 256 pp. Reduced from $235.
