8vo [19 x 14 cm]; x, 293 pp, frontis, plates from drawings. original brown cloth, gilt spine title lettering, corner worn, else a clean solid and near fine copy. Taylor had first visited Japan as part of Perry's expedition of 1854 and Griffis updates the account with new information but preserving the best of the original. A good picture of life as it was with travels throughout the country including Yedo, Yokohama, an ascent of Fuji-Yama, Kamakura, Tokio (Tokyo), Echizen, etc and which includes Consul-general Harris's account of his journey to Yedo.
