Leather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). A very scarce volume of religious short stories by H. L. Sidney Lear, edited by Rev. W. J. E. Bennett. The first and only edition of this very scarce volume. In full calf binding, with gilt decoration to the spine.Comprising stories with religious themes and lessons, such as 'Denis the Beggar Boy', 'Johanna of Nuremberg' and 'Once a Gentleman'.Though published anonymously, this work is credited to Henrietta Louisa Sidney Farrer Lear, a prolific Victorian author on religious lives and a long-time resident of Salisbury's Cathedral Close.Edited by W. J. E. Bennett, an Anglican priest who is noted for having provoked the decision that the doctrine of the Real Presence is a dogma not inconsistent with the creed of the Church of England. In full calf binding, with gilt decoration to the spine. Externally, smart, with slight rubbing to the extremities, heaviest to the spine, and dark spots to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with scattered spotting to the endpapers and a contemporary ink inscription to the half title page. Very Good. book.
