Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Volume I only, originally two volumes. Illustrated. Original leather binding with blind relief decoration on boards, raised bands, and gilt lettering on spine. Stamped H. & E. Martin on front board. Leather is exceptionally worn, front board is completely loose from binding, and there is some pest damage to the leather leaving the boards exposed. The corners are also exposed, and there is considerable water damage to the inside front pages on the lower corner, so that the page edges are very fragile. Yellow front endpaper, marbleized endpaper at rear in pink, gray, orange, blue and black. Page edges are also marbled but greatly faded. Damaged frontispiece depicting paradise, other illustrations in body. Title continues: to which are added the references and marginal readings of the Polyglott Bible, together with original notes, and selections from Bagster's Comprehensive Bible, and other standard works, introductory and concluding remarks on each book of the old and new testaments, and a valuable chronological index; the whole carefully revised and adapted to the use of Sunday schools, bible classes, and Christians generally, embellished with maps and engravings. Hardcover, acceptable condition. 736 pages plus maps, quarto.

Contemporary red full morocco, with gilt titles and decoration to spine, and Gray's Eton memorial and Eton College Chapel stamped in gilt to boards. All edges gilt, and endpapers marbled. Black ink gift inscription to first blank: 'William K.H.R. White | with the best wishes | of his sincere friend | Charles J. Cornish | on his leaving Eton | Midsummer 1847.' Heavy spotting to plates, blanks and facing leaves, otherwise crisp and clean. Spine toned, with some light rubbing and a couple of bumps. Very good. A decidedly deluxe edition of Gray's poetry, with about one third of the volume consisting of a Life of the poet. Likely bound to be used interchangeably as a gift or prize book.

A decidedly deluxe edition of Gray's poetry, with nearly half the volume consisting of additional material, including a Life of the poet, some literary criticism, and even a series of 'introductory stanzas' by the Reverend John Moultrie. Likely bound to be used interchangeably as a gift or prize book, it contains no evidence of a dedication or prize inscription.

Volume II has the end of the Old Testament and the start of the New Testament, separated by Chronological tables and pages for a personal family record. The family record contains entries from the Nash marriage, Dec. 25, 1828 to the death of Joseph Nash on Dec. 23, 1885 at the age of 80. Penciled slips of family tree data going back to 1608 are present. Covers of both volumes are worn, Vol I spine 50% of the black title square and the black vol # square has peeled off the lether, Volume 2 is missing 50% of the black title square. Both have small tears on the top and bottom of the spine. The owners name and date 1835 are written on the front and back flyleaf of Vol I, and on the front flyleaf of Vol 2. Pages are browned and foxed but most are clear and bright with little foxing. Each book has a bit of page rippling. Rare Antiquarian Religion.
