Decorative Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. A lovely little book, blue cloth, lots of gold stamping on cover and spine, a.e.g., beveled edges, brown endpapers, lots of steel engravings. Bookplate. A VG unmarked copy. No foxing. No date, but 1890 would be my guess.

Full-Leather. Condition: Very Good+. No Jacket. In tan full leather, Raised bands, gilt tooling and leather label with titles on spine. Marbled page edges and end papers. Light wear to edges of leather.

Condition: Very Good Minus. 2nd Edition. Full calf leather Eton prize binding. Spine with five raised bands, morocco title label, gilt decoration. Gilt vignette and gilt & blind border to both boards. Gilt decoration to board edges, blind tooled turn-ins. Marbled page edges and endpapers. Spine rubbed and lacking most of the gilt decoration. Light marking to boards. Good solid binding with no cracking to joints. Occasional patches of foxing to the text. A couple of ink spots to one page. Heavy foxing to some of the plates. Provenance: from the library of Williamstrip Park, Coln St. Aldwyns - seat of the Hicks Beach family. Inscribed to leading presentation page: 'Michael Hicks-Beach from H.J.C. Harper, March 23, 1850.' Henry John Chitty Harper served as chaplain of Eton College. In 1856 he became Bishop of Christchurch, New Zealand and eventually went on to become the second Primate of New Zealand. The book recipient was Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Bt., 1st Earl of St. Aldwyn and 9th Baronet of Beverston. He had a long political career, serving as a Conservative MP from 1864 until 1906, twice serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and briefly as Leader of the Opposition in 1886. With 15 steel engravings and woodcuts after drawings by Charles Radclyffe, including a frontispiece and vignette title page, each with a tissue guard. Good-sized print on good paper. Contemporary tan full calf with raised bands, gilt titles to red label, and further gilt tooling to spine. Also with Gray's Eton memorial and Eton College Chapel stamped in gilt to boards. All edges and endpapers marbled. Black ink ownership to first blank. Heavy spotting to plates and facing leaves, otherwise quite clean internally. Much of the gilt decoration on the spine has been rubbed away, but the title label is unaffected. Light wear to binding overall. Very good. A decidedly deluxe edition of Gray's poetry, with nearly half the volume consisting of additional material, including a Life of the poet, some literary criticism, and even a series of 'introductory stanzas' by the Reverend John Moultrie. Likely bound to be used interchangeably as a gift or prize book, it contains no evidence of a dedication or prize inscription.…
