Seller: Books by White/Walnut Valley Books, Winfield, KS, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Cranston and Curts / Hunt and Eaton, Cincinnati / New York. 1857. This date comes from the Preface which is dated 1857 and from an edition of this from the Western Book Concern dated 1857 and 1860 on the title page; based on the book's construction it probably is a later printing of the 1857 original more in the early 1900s. Hardcover. Reprint edition. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Fair; shelfwear to head, tail, tips, boards; toning to pages; FFFP and RFFP appear to be missing; title page is loose in binding. No DJ. Green cloth boards with red lettering and rules on the spine and front board. Inner hinges are split but still holding strong by mull cloth. 528 pp 12mo. This book was written when Rev. Young was 82 years old (b1775) and is based on his recollections as a circuit riding preacher in the 1800s in Ohio and Kentucky. This book not only details the experiences in the life of Mr. Young but presents a vivid picture, or instead, a series of vivid images of the life and conditions of the frontier. Moreover, although he became a recognized leader in his denomination, he never became a high-ranking permanent official. Instead, he remained through his long life, a pioneer clergyman, never out of touch with the ordinary people whom he served so long and so faithfully. Therefore, his story gives a better picture of real life among the people, perhaps that could have been given by a bishop, a college president, or a long-retired worker out of touch with the people about whom he was writing. A somewhat fragile but still readable copy.

Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. Facsimile. Softcover facsimile reprint of the 1853 memoir. ; MCN34829; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 365 pp.
Paperback. Apparently an ad hoc commemorative piece, softcover, approximately 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, consisting of the 3 separate works mentioned in the title, with a tipped-in photo of a statue of Mullen by Albert E Harnisch, with a handwritten notation mentoning that it was shown at the Centennial Exhibition in 1876 (made to appear a bit kitschy by the addition of the ubiquitous cherubs from Raphael's "Assumption" and a few other details from paintings superimposed in the foreground) , a tipped-in engraving by Sartain with just the statue of Mullen, a full page drawing of the House of Industry founded by the Philadelphia Society for the Employment and Instruction of the Poor, an in-text drawing of Mullen, and another of the Church of the Evangelists, all bound into gray paper covers. Very good. Covers are lightly age tanned, 1 inch chip off upper corner of rear cover, several lesser nicks and chips, text lightly age yellowed, with "ghost" of the engraving on the page facing, but otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp and unmarked. William J Mullen was one of the great prison and social reformers of the 19th century, securing the release of thousands who were being held without trial, and a founder and director of the abovementioned Society and poor house. Scarce. Biography; prison reform; sociology; jurisprudence; Victorian; history; Americana.
