Herr Eugène Robert in Paris sandte mir gütigst im jahre 1846, nbest den Berichten über die Ausgrabungen welche er mit dem Herrn Serres im Herbste 1845 zu Meudon bei Versailles vorgenommen hatte, einen Schädel aus Marly in derselben Gegend und von derselben Art, als andere, bei Meudon gefundene, von denen sogleich die Rede sein wird. . Retzius Anders Adolf Retzius, "schwedischer Anatom, geb. 13. Oct. 1796 in Lund, woselbst sein Vater, der wegen seines umfassenden Wissens ausgezeichnete Anders John Retzius, Professor der Naturgeschichte war. Nach Studien, theils in Lund, theils in Kopenhagen, wurde Retzius zum Dr. med., in Lund 1819 promovirt, diente darauf als Militärarzt zuerst in Schonen, später in Jemtland, wurde 1823 zum Professor am Veterinär-Institut in Stockholm, im folgenden Jahre zum stellvertretenden Professor der Anatomie am Karoloinischen Institute und 1840 zum ordentlichen Professor der Anatomie und Inspector daselbst ernannt. In dieser Stellung wirkte er, mit Ausnahme verschiedener wissenschaftlicher Reisen, theils in Schweden, theils im Auslande, unausgesetzt als Forscher und Lehrer bis zu seinem Tode, 18.April 1860, in Stockholm. ." Erste deutsche Ausgabe der Einführung des "Kopfindexs Anders Retzius (1796-1860) gilt als der Erfinder des Kopfindexs. Anders Retzius fand 1842 heraus, daß sich Schweden und Lappen, ja viele Rassen der Erde durch den Längenvergleich der Schädelkapsel ausgezeichnet unterscheiden lassen und so kam nicht nur der Schädelindex, sondern die für die Anthropologie so wichtige Methode der Indizes überhaupt in Gebrauch. Dieser Index stellte einehervorragend geschickte Vereinfachung der natürlichen Formverschiedenheiten dar. Der Prozeß der Indexberechnung besteht darin, daß ein Maß in Prozenten eines anderen ausgedrückt wird, z.B. die Nasenbreite in Prozenten der Nasenhöhle. das Resultat ist dann der Nasenindex. Ebenso ergibt die Kopfbreite in Prozenten dr Kopflänge ausgedrückt den Kopfindex. Ein großer Kopf bestimmter Form hat dabei allerdings denselben Index wie ein kleiner Kopf der gleichen Form. -cf. Crepin übersetzte Vortrag eröffnete erstmal einem größeren internationalen Leserkreis den von Herrn Prof. Retzius in der Versammlung der skandinavischen Naturforscher in Stockholm, 1842 vorgetragen Vortrag der erstmas in deren Abhandlungen 1842 abgedruckt wurde.
