Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. THIS IS THE PRE-PUBLICATION REVIEW COPY. Some creasing of spine and covers otherwise quite good. It runs to 368 pages. Major Reginald Hargreaves was a British military historian and officer whose other works include This Happy Breed: The Story of Lower Deck and Red Sun Rising: The Siege of Port Arthur. The title is a colloquial reference to the red coats of the British infantry and the bloodied backs that resulted from flogging — a disciplinary practice central to the eighteenth-century military experience Hargreaves is examining. The book covers a period of one hundred and twenty-eight years of British military and naval presence in the western hemisphere, opening with the mid-seventeenth-century Caribbean campaigns and closing with the defeat at Yorktown and the end of the American Revolutionary War. The Dull's Books catalogue description confirms it includes the naval aspects of the Seven Years War and the American Revolutionary War alongside the land campaigns, giving it a combined arms scope unusual in military histories of the period. The organizing principle is social and experiential rather than purely operational. Hargreaves is concerned less with strategy and command decisions — the traditional subject matter of military history — than with what it actually meant to be a common British soldier or sailor in this theatre: the conditions of service, the experience of combat in North American and Caribbean environments utterly unlike anything men raised in Britain had encountered, the relationships between regulars and colonial militias, the logistical realities of campaigning at enormous distance from the home base, and the particular hardships of Caribbean garrison duty, where tropical disease killed far more men than combat. The book draws on contemporary diaries, letters, regimental records, and period accounts to reconstruct this experience from the ground up, and the result is a work that treats the ranker and the junior officer as seriously as it does the commanders whose decisions shaped their fates.…
