Anton Refregier. [Exhibition catalogue.] New York: A.C.A. Gallery (American Contemporary Art Gallery), March 16-23, 1942. First edition. Self-wrappers (paper folded and stapled). Approximately 9 x 12 inches, 18 pp. With 32 illustrations of Refregier drawings and preliminary studies. Text by Herman Baron (founder of ACA Galleries) and others. Front cover printed with artist's name, exhibition dates, and ACA Gallery imprint. The catalogue for Refregier's first one-man show. A significant document of mid-century American social realism, published at the moment Refregier transitioned from his celebrated WPA work into his most ambitious independent career. The 32 illustrated drawings include preliminary designs for his iconic and later-controversial murals at the Rincon Annex Post Office in San Francisco (begun 1941, completed 1948), his murals for the WPA Building at the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, and his interior designs for the legendary Café Society Uptown ? the integrated New York jazz club where Billie Holiday first performed "Strange Fruit." A foundational catalogue for Refregier studies, WPA mural research, ACA Galleries history, and the broader documentation of Depression-era and wartime American leftist art. Published by A.C.A. Gallery, founded 1932 by Herman Baron, Stuart Davis, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Adolf Dehn ? the leading gallery for American social realist and progressive artists of the 1930s-50s. Anton Refregier (1905-1979), Russian-born, RISD-trained, and a student of Hans Hofmann, settled in Woodstock, New York, after this 1942 ACA debut and became one of the defining muralists of the WPA era. Condition: Very Good. Self-wrapper covers intact with no tears, splits, or chips. Staple binding firm. Moderate foxing throughout, more concentrated along page edges. Lower right corners of pages show historic bending (since flattened) with visible crease marks; no tears or losses. No inscriptions, no markings, no library stamps. All 32 illustrations present and clearly visible. Pages complete, text fully legible. A scarce and historically important first-show catalogue, well-preserved structurally despite age-related foxing ? uncommon to find on the open market in any condition.
