Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 19 Pages (290 through 309). Stapled binding. A periodical publication with Frank Reeve's article regarding Navajo geography. Evidence of label removal top of front cover. No other defects noted. In early Navajo history, the reader is confronted with certain geographic terms that are not familiar. They are. Cebolleta, Navajo and Piedra Alumbre or Lumbre. Their historical locations are essential in tracing the story of the Navajo people. Fixing the locations is partly a matter of defining words. The Spanish word alumbre means alum, which is a mineral salt. In color it may be either reddish, gray, white streaked white, or it may have a pearly lustre. This is a commercial alum which is used as a mordant in dyeing. The word lumbre means fire, spark from a flint, brightness, lucidity, clearness. The term piedra lumbre was used by Fray Alonso de Benavides in his memorial to New Mexico in the late 1620's describing the country of the Navajo people. Beginning approximately from an east-west line just to the south of Mt Taylor, he wrote of the mountainous country to the north ward as follows: This cordillera runs another fifty or sixty leagues, the which are full of deposits of rock. The term piedra lumbre is thus translated as rock alum, with the translator however, taking the liberty of substituting alumbre for lumbre. It supposedly follows from Fray Alonso's words that the mountain chain is generously endowed with this particular mineral.
