Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1995 Trust for Wessex Archaeology large format paperback edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. Excavations in advance of housing development on the outskirts of Basingstoke revealed extensive evidence of Iron Age, Roman, and medieval occupation. A series of Early-Late Iron Age enclosure complexes, including a banjo enclosure, contained evidence for zones of domestic settlement which included pits, four-post structures, and extensive assemblages of artefacts, bone, and carbonised plant remains. Site A contained the remains of a medieval church with associated graveyard and domestic structures. A two-cell church of 11th-12th century date survived as well found-dations surrounded by fenced graveyard. At least six timber buildings and associated pits and post-holes indicate unenclosed settlement close by. In the late 12th-14th centuries the graveyard was enclosed by ditches and at least 250 burials made. A priest was buried in the church with a pewter paten and chalice. Further wooden buildings, pits, an oven, and a trackway form part of an enclosed settlement - probably the lost medieval village of Hatch.…

Rare complete set consisting of Batavia, Java, Buitenzorg, and De Buitenbezittingen (outer possessions). The work presents a romanticised account of the Indonesia and enjoyed considerable popularity despite its high price. This grand production is distinguished in the history of Indonesian illustration on account of the lithographs being executed not from the original drawings but from photographs. The text is considered highly readable, being by two of the most popular 19th-century writers on Indonesia but it was Rappard's artwork that captured the topography and people of the East Indies that made the series a success. Rappard was an Army officer living in the Dutch colonies from 1842 to 1872. First edition; 4 vols, folio; lithographed titles, 103 chromo-lithographed plates mounted on heavy paper after Rappard, original red morocco-backed cloth, decorated in black, silver and gilt, covers with bevelled edges. Bindings rubbed, with wear to extremities, Batavia vol with inner hinges reinforced, scattered foxing throughout, a few small marginal tears to page edges, original tissue guards (some browned, some damaged), a good set.
