Add to basketCondition: Very good. - An 10-1/8 inch high by 8-1/8 inch wide glossy black & white vintage photograph depicting Michael Redgrave from the chest up. The actor is attired in a tweed jacket over white tie and shirt holding a pipe in his hand. The number "MR-1" is printed in white within the bottom right of the image, with Universa…l Pictures Co.'s credits along the bottom edge. There are very minor creases to the edges. Three holes are punched along the left edge of the photo. Very good. This a vintage publicity photo, not a reproduction, sent out to newspapers and periodicals of the period. Text from a printed press release is tipped onto the verso. It reads: "Universal-International, Universal City, Calif. Michael Redgrave, who has distinguished himself on the British screen, will be seen in his first Hollywood-made film, 'Secret Beyond the Door,' co-starring with Joan Bennett. A Diana Production, the film is being produced and directed by Fritz Lang at Universal-International".

The year 1944 has been added in another hand. Addressed to 'Dear Mr. Macdermid' and signed 'Michael Redgrave'. He is grateful to him for the suggestion that he 'should be an Hon. As…sociate Member of your Club, to which I wish every success', but feels 'rather strongly that I must not put my name to anything more than I can actively take part in - even if activity is confined to letter writing etc. which is the case of my Presidency of the Bristol W.E.A. Players, for example.' He finds that 'People with lively sympathies are apt to become the victims of their enthusiasm and are sooner or later in danger of being known as cranks. For that reason, I most gratefully must refuse your offer.'.

The message concerns the London production of Fry's 'The Lark' (a translation of Anouilh's 'L'Alouette'), which opened at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, on 11 May 1955. Redgrave wou…ld star in Fry's next play, 'Tiger at the Gates' (a translation of Giraudoux's 'La guerre de Troie n'aura pas lieu'), which premiered in New York on 3 October 1955. Written out in an elegant calligraphic hand, and reading: 'My dear Christopher: / This is rather late for the first night but I hope better than never. / The show goes well, I think. / Yours / Mike.'
