Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Fine. DJ: Fine; NOT Price Clipped ($24.95). Black paper over boards and spine with bright silver lettering on the spine. 252 pp 8vo. In WWI, The Grand Fleet (Royal Navy) far outnumbered and outgunned the German fleet yet when the met at Jutland the outcome was a draw. Something clearly was wrong and the public waited for the official histories of the battle to be released to learn the truth. Still, no official report was produced, due to objections from Admiral Beatty (British Admiral of the Fleet, who commanded Britain's battle cruisers in the Battle of Jutland (1916). This led to Admiral Bacon producing his own account of the battle, called The Jutland Scandal, in 1925. Two years later the man instructed to write the official report, Rear-Admiral Harper, decided to publish his account independently, under the title The Truth about Jutland. Together, these two books lay bare the facts about Jutland and reveal the failings of senior officers and the distortions of the early historians. Produced as one volume for the first time, this book tells the truth about the scandal that developed following the largest battle ever fought at sea. A clean very presentable copy.…

Steinbeck Centennial Edition (1902 - 2002). Includes About John Steinbeck and rear section regarding additional Penguin's deluxe Steinbeck Centennial Editions. A remainder mark at lower page edge. "An intimate portrait of two men who cherish the slim bond between them and the dream they share in a world marred by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. Clinging to each other in their loneliness and alienation, George and his simple-minded friend Lenny dream, as drifters will, of a place to call their own - a couple of acres and a few pigs, chickens, and rabbits back in Hill Country where land is cheap. But after they come to work on a ranch in the fertile Salinas Valley of California, their hopes, like "the best laid schemes o' mice an' men," begin to go awry. Of Mice and Men also represents an experiment in form, as Steinbeck described his work, "a kind of playable novel, written in novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands." A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films. Steinbeck's tale of commitment, loneliness, hope, and loss remains one of America's most widely read and beloved novels." - from the inner front French-style extended front cover flap. "Surprisingly, one of sport's most contentious, complex, and defining clashes played out not in the boxing ring or at the line of scrimmage but on the genteel green fairways of the world's finest golf courses. Arnie and Jack. Palmer and NIcklaus. Their fifty-year duel, in both the clubhouse and the boardroom, propelled each to the status of American icon and pushed modern golf to the heights and popularity it enjoys today. With dogged reporting and crisp, colorful storytelling, the award-winning sports columnist Ian O'Connor explores this heated professional and personal battle in fascinating, intimate, and revelatory detail. Drawing on unique and exclusive access to Palmer and Nicklaus, and informed by some two hundred new interviews, O'Connor illuminates the two men's extreme differences and sprawling influence through mini-dramas, such as their little-known first meeting on the course, the topsy-turvy U.S. Open in 1962, their early involvement with marketing and a small agency called IMG, and later their intense competition for golf-course designs. By the end of this page-turning narrative, which spans five remarkable decades, we see that each man wanted what the other had: Arnold had the adoring fans but wanted the trophies. Jack had the trophies but wanted the love." - from the inner front jacket flap. Small remainder mark on lower page edge. "The Way I Heard It began as a collection of short stories pulled from my podcast -- a simple attempt to satisfy listeners who wanted written versions of my weekly five-minute mysteries. That, according to my mother, was "the very definition of lazy." So, I sat down to explain why I wrote these mysteries in the first place. Before I knew it, that new material turned into something deeply personal and entirely unexpected. The result is what you're holding: a curious mix of memoir and mystery. I suppose you could call it a "memstery," but that's not really a word, so let's just call it what it is -- a book. Inside this book, you'll learn about my strange foray into the belly of the Baltimore Opera, my various humiliations in the home shopping industry, and my many run-ins with dirty jobbers, bloody do-gooders, B-list celebrities, and Hollywood hotshots. You'll also meet my mom and dad, who continue to upstage me at every turn. Mostly, though, you'll learn why I write about famous people I've never met, and what I discovered about myself in the process. It's not the book I sat down to write; it is, however, the book that wanted to be written. And now, it's the book I hope you'll read. It's The Way I heard It. - Mike Rowe, from the rear outer jacket. "A ridiculously entertaining, seriously riveting collection of favorite episodes from America's #1 short-form podcast, The Way I Heard It, along with a host of memories, ruminations, illustrations, and insights from Mike Rowe. Executive producer and host Mike Rowe presents thirty-five fascinating stories "for the curious mind with a short attention span." Short mysteries about people you know, filled with startling facts that you didn't. Movie stars, madmen, heroes, and heels: they're all here, waiting to shake your hand, hoping you'll remember them. Delivered with Mike Rowe's signature blend of charm, wit, and ingenuity, their adventures are part of a larger mosaic -- a memoir crammed with surprising revelations, sharp observations, and behind-the-scenes moments drawn from a remarkable life and career." - from the inner front jacket flap. Vairo, Jr., John; (jacket design); Segal, Michael (front jacket photograph); Dazeley, Peter (rear jacket photograph) (illustrator).…
