Paperback. Condition: Good in wraps. 15 x 22cm 254pp good paperback, small previous price sticker on rear cover. "Tribal Art Traffic" traces the movements of hundreds of thousands of masks, statues, amulets, shields, pieces of cloth, utensils, and weapons from overseas tribal cultures to and within North Atlantic societies, in c…olonial and post colonial times. While the focus is on the relatively small Low Countries and their huge overseas territories, the Belgian Congo and the Netherlands East Indies, related developments in three adjacent colonial powers, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, are also covered, as are links to the United States. This book charts the means and places through which tribal objects circulated and continue to circulate: colonial trading posts, missionary posts, attics and cellars, living rooms, museums, flea markets, monasteries, auction houses, artists' studios, private collections, and art galleries. In the second part of the book dealers, collectors, and curators relate their more recent experiences with objects-in-motion. This chronicle of European taste, trade and desire sketches the emergence of a western market for tribal art in the course of the twentieth century. - googleboks. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 87 pp., illustrations, bibliography. 'Of Jars and Gongs' deals with the traditional art of Ot Danum Dayak. Much of their art depicts the journey of the soul of the deceased through a richly variegated spirit world. The present publication offers a comparative analysis of var…ious Ot Danum ritual objects. It draws on a long tradition of ethnographic writing on the area stretching back to the mid-19th century, mainly by German and Swiss Protestant missionaries and Dutch colonials. Raymond Corbey is an anthropologist attached to Leiden University, the Netherlands. His research includes the history of dealings with non-Western ritual art by, among others, missionaries, art dealers and museums.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Over the past century, traditional ritual art linked to ancestor cults and spirit beliefs has diminished in the Raja Ampat archipelago. This work aims to catalog 'mon' spirit figures, 'korwars,' and secret priests' drawings, exploring the activities of naturalists, explorers, colonial administrators…, and missionaries since the early 19th century. It provides an in-depth discussion of the social and cosmological contexts surrounding these spirit and ancestor figurines, revealing intricate details and fresh insights. The decline of traditional art is attributed to complex interactions involving indigenous agency, religious conversion, cargo cults, modernization, and administrative interventions. The book is richly illustrated, featuring sacred-secret drawings created by indigenous priests for their rituals, which were believed to be lost but have recently been rediscovered. The author, an anthropologist at Leiden University in the Netherlands, has previously published works examining the Marind Anim of New Guinea and Dayak cosmology.
