Grundlegende Monographie über Ratgeb aus dem Nachlaß Fraengers, an der er über 30 Jahre arbeitete. Über Ratgebs Leben gibt es bis heute nur wenige gesicherte Daten. Fraenger sah wie auch Andere in dem schmalen, erhalten gebliebenen Werk des Malers ein politisches Manifest, weil dieser sich im Bauernkrieg für die Seite der Bauern engagiert hatte und dafür letztlich auch verhaftet und 1525 oder 26 hingerichtet wurde. Diese Deutungen werden heute allerdings von den meisten Kunsthistorikern als zu einseitig abgelehnt. Sprache: de.
